Thoughts
Below are some of my random thoughts on design. Let me first warn you before reading on. I am not a writer. I am a designer (which is why I removed commenting from this blog). I know more about ligatures than I do languages, and I’m an expert at the grid not grammar.
So now that’s out of the way, let me tell you how I feel about Graphic Design. I usually don’t like calling it that because of the generic quality it suggests, but I guess its better than saying Computer Artistry, right? Anyway, we all remember the science fair. Who’s project usually won, the meat volcano on mom’s cheese platter or the electromagnetic marvel with a hanging, foam board display? Well, graphics kind of work the same way, and I’m not just talking about uniqueness but more simply a memorable impression. Even the most unique concepts which are still governed by principals of design go unnoticed. On a more technical note, graphics are the catalyst for formulating an impression both conceptually and visually. Design is the approach taken to manipulate the catalyst so that we all understand and accept it.
As visual communicators, designers are translators. We give shape to thought and build image from ideas. It is also the responsibility of a designer to transform meaning into something more, something purposeful and unforgettable. We often bring order to that which is not orderly, but the most successful visual relationships are those that are not just easily read and understood but those that invoke feeling and create drive. Design is essential. It inspires us and gives meaning to that which is unseen.
